Info: Square Enix was born in 2003 from the merger of Square Co., Ltd. and Enix Corporation, two Japanese giants that had already shaped the role-playing game (RPG) genre since the mid-1980s.
Square rose to fame with Final Fantasy (1987), created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, which became one of the most successful RPG series in history.
Enix had established itself earlier with Dragon Quest (1986, designed by Yuji Horii), considered the blueprint of the Japanese RPG genre.
The merger unified the two most beloved RPG brands in Japan and turned Square Enix into an international powerhouse. Beyond RPGs, the company expanded into action-adventures, Western IPs (after acquiring Eidos), and online games.
Today, Square Enix continues to dominate with Final Fantasy XIV (MMORPG), Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest, while also publishing Western franchises such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex until recently.
